Choosing Psychology Support for ND Clients: A Guide for Support Coordinators
As a Support Coordinator or Therapy Manager, your goal is to bridge the gap between a client’s NDIS goals and the actual support that helps them thrive. However, when it comes to neurodivergent clients—those with ADHD, Autism, or other cognitive differences—the search for a psychologist often feels like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Traditional therapy environments and rigid clinical structures don't always translate well for neurodivergent individuals. To help you find the best fit, here is a quick guide on what to prioritize in your referral process.
1. The Credentials Matter (AHPRA is the Gold Standard)
Before anything else, ensure the psychologist is AHPRA Registered. This ensures they meet national standards for clinical integrity and evidence-based practice. At The LifeBridge Network, our registered psychologists focus on providing care that is grounded in research but tailored to the individual.
2. Sensory-Friendly and Low-Friction Options
For many neurodivergent clients, the "journey" to therapy is the hardest part. Navigating traffic, parking, and sensory-overwhelming waiting rooms can lead to burnout before the session even starts.
This is where online therapy is a game-changer. By allowing clients to attend sessions from their own safe, controlled sensory environment, you remove significant barriers to engagement and consistency.
3. Neuro-Affirming vs. "Compliance" Therapy
Look for practitioners who use a neuro-affirming approach. Instead of trying to "fix" neurodivergence, the goal should be to help the client understand their brain, manage executive functioning challenges, and build a life that accommodates their needs rather than fighting against them.
Big News: We’re Building a Directory
We know how much time you spend vetting providers. To make your life easier, we are currently developing a specialized directory of vetted, quality neurodivergent-affirming supports. Our goal is to create a one-stop-shop for Support Coordinators to find reliable, evidence-based services that actually "get" neurodivergence. Stay tuned for more updates as we roll this out!
