So you've decided you want to see a Psychologist! Let's demystify the process a bit so you feel ready and settled in what to expect...
1. Getting Started: The Referral Process
In many cases, individuals seeking psychological services require a referral from their General Practitioner (GP) and a Mental Health Care Plan. This step is essential to access Medicare rebates for your sessions.
To start the process:
a. Consult Your GP/ Your Support Co-Ordinator:
Begin by scheduling an appointment with your GP, who will assess your mental health needs. If they determine that you would benefit from the services of a psychologist, they can issue you a referral. You don't need to be "broken" or at a certain level to see a psychologist. If you'd like to see one, stay firm in your decision, sometimes GP's might try to talk you out of it.
b. Mental Health Care Plan:
Your GP will also help you create a Mental Health Care Plan, which outlines your treatment goals and the number of sessions required. This plan is vital in ensuring you receive the financial support you need for your sessions. You will often get an initial 6 sessions before your Psychologist will request an additional 4. This will total 10 per calendar year!
NDIS (Plan and Self Managed Clients):
NDIS participants with plan-managed and self-managed funding, have the flexibility to self-refer through our website by booking themselves in for a free 30 min meet and greet, an initial session or contacting us directly . Additionally, clients can choose to have their Support Coordinator fill out a referral form on our website, www.thelifebridgenetwork.com.au. This ensures that NDIS clients have a direct avenue to access our services.
c. Send Your Referral to Your Chosen Psychologist:
Once you have your referral and Mental Health Care Plan, you can choose a psychologist. It's a good idea to send your referral to the psychologist before your first appointment. At LifeBridge Network, we encourage our clients to send their referral and documentation to us in advance, making the process seamless.
2. The Free 30-Minute Meet and Greet
At The LifeBridge Network, we believe in the importance of a strong therapist-client relationship. We offer a free 30-minute meet and greet session to help potential clients feel more comfortable with the process. During this introductory meeting, you can:
a. Meet Your Psychologist:
This initial meeting provides an opportunity for you to meet the psychologist who may be supporting you. It's essential to establish a sense of comfort and trust.
b. Ask Questions:
You can ask any questions you may have about the therapeutic process, the psychologist's approach, or the services offered at The LifeBridge Network.
c. Assess Compatibility:
It's essential to gauge if the psychologist's style and approach align with your needs and expectations. This is a critical factor in ensuring a successful therapeutic relationship.
3. Preparing for Your First Session
After your meet and greet, you may decide that The LifeBridge Network is the right fit for you. As you prepare for your first psychology session, consider the following:
a. Documentation:
Ensure that you have your referral, Mental Health Care Plan, and any other relevant medical or psychological documents ready to provide to your psychologist.
b. Goals and Expectations:
Take some time to reflect on what you hope to achieve in therapy. Understanding your goals and expectations can help you and your psychologist work together more effectively.
c. Open Communication:
Be prepared to discuss your concerns, feelings, and experiences openly. The more you share, the more your psychologist can tailor their approach to your needs. It can be daunting, and it's okay to have a lot of emotions going into it. Perhaps plan something run or relaxing afterwards to give yourself space to feel!
d. Comfort: Arrive with an open mind and a willingness to engage in the process. Your psychologist is there to support you and provide a safe space for your personal growth.
4. What to Expect During the First Session
Your first psychology session is a unique and important experience. Here's what you can typically expect:
a. Administrative Requirements:
Confidentiality: Your psychologist will explain the principles of confidentiality, ensuring that your personal information is handled with the utmost care and that the therapeutic space is safe for sharing.
b. Information Gathering:
Your psychologist will welcome you and introduce themselves, creating a comfortable and non-judgmental atmosphere.
c. Assessment:
Your psychologist may conduct an initial assessment to better understand your mental health and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This might include taking history and asking about your childhood.
d. Goal Setting:
Together, you and your psychologist will set specific, achievable goals for your therapy.
e. Questions and Clarifications:
You are encouraged to ask questions, clarify any concerns, and express any reservations during this session. If you have anything that is triggering for you or that you'd rather not talk about, feel free to be upfront about this before your psychologist asks you any questions.
f. Risk:
Your Psychologist is required to ask you some potentially hard hitting questions about risk to yourself or other people. This is sometimes covered in confidentiality, but important to note if there are any extra steps required. If you have concerns about this part, raise them with your Psychologist.
5. What Happens Next?
After your first psychology session, your psychologist will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan. This plan will outline the goals of your therapy and the number of sessions recommended in your Mental Health Care Plan. You and your psychologist will continue to work together to address your concerns and work toward your goals.

We understand the importance of finding the right fit, and our free 30-minute meet and greet is designed to help you make an informed decision.
